The first thing a predator senses is the slightest insecurity. He observes the object struggling to fit in or struggling to achieve a task and not quite making it. He moves in with kindness, with caring attention and helpful suggestions. I wrote ALTERED BOYS CLUB after reading all of the newspaper accounts of pedophile priests, teacher, and coaches and remembering. I was not an altar boy. I was an eighteen year old college freshman on a partial scholarship when my predator found me. I dreamed of being an actor, but I also feared never being good enough. It didn’t take him long to put me in a position where I could “learn at the master’s knee.” The problem was the price I would have to pay for his special tutoring. The board had been set up and the game commenced.
